Frankenstein’s Legions (di John Whitbourn)

Segnalarvi questo ebook è una scelta particolare per me, visto e considerato che lo spunto della trama richiama in più di un passaggio la mia trilogia Prometeo e la Guerra (trovate gli ebook nell’apposita sezione del blog).
John Whitbourn parte infatti da uno spunto non troppo diverso dal mio: e se qualcuno, ipoteticamente parlando, avesse rubato la tecnologia resuscitante del barone Victor von Frankestein per utilizzarla su scala industriale?
E’ ciò che immagina l’autore di Frankenstein’s Legions, in un romanzo steampunk/horror ambientato nel 1830. Il governo repubblicano francese ha sottratto la scoperta del barone, sfruttandola per creare un’armata di lazaroidi: corpi rianimati utilizzati come truppe d’assalto. Gli altri stati europei, Regno Unito incluso, non possono far altro che copiare i francesi, onde non rimanese indifesi davanti all’orda di creature non morte.
Tra intrighi, storia alternativa e avventure, il romanzo di Whitbourn pare proprio regalare ciò che promette: divertimento.
Le recensioni sono tutte positive, perciò ho ritenuto opportuno segnalarvelo.
Purtroppo ho tardato qualche giorno nel farlo e ora l’ebook non è più disponibile per il dowload gratuito. Se volete leggerlo dovete quindi scucire poco meno di cinque euro.

The republican regime, inspired by zeal and desperation, has swept over Europe, employing inexhaustible swarms of zombie-like (or Lazaroid) troops. The remaining independent nations, including England, are obliged to shed their scruples and likewise raise Lazaroid armies.
Across this crazed and Gothic history stride Julius Frankenstein, soldier nephew of the notorious scientist; Charles Babbage inventor of the proto-computer Difference Engine; and the Honourable Augusta Ada, Countess of Lovelace, genius daughter of Lord Byron. Pulling their strings – they believe – are the puppetmasters Talleyrand, French statesman par excellence and now a renegade in English employ; and Sir Percy Blakeney, sometime Scarlet Pimpernel and current head of the British Secret Service.
Meanwhile, the French have been unwise enough to revive their recently deceased Emperor. The intention was simply to pick the brain of history’s foremost military mind. However, the risen Emperor Napoleon is developing fresh ambitions of his own…
